Which Horse will Steal the First of the Cups Double?
One of Australia’s richest thoroughbred races and the richest of its type in the world, the Caulfield Cup was first run in the autumn of 1879, with Newminster becoming the inaugural champion.
In 1881 the Cup became a Spring fixture and now sits firmly on the Spring Carnival Calendar. Today the Group One Caulfield Cup is one of Australia's toughest and best handicap races and is a major lead-up to the Melbourne Cup.
The Big Names...
Weekend Hussler ($6.00)
Hussler continues to be the first name to roll off lips when asked for a favourite. He equalled the record for most Group One wins in a single season last year and is now back to go for greater glory. Coming out of barrier 11 this gelding will be one to watch.
Master O'Reilly ($6.50)
Many will remember O'Reilly from last year. In spite of a 1.5kg penalty last year, O'Reilly stormed out of the pack to steal this race in 2007 and became the favourite for the first Tuesday in November. Forget the disappointment of Melbourne: this horse is here to win.
Littorio ($6.50)
Littorio has had a great warm up, trumping 2007 winner, Master O'Reilly, just a few weeks ago at Flemington's Turnball Stakes. And, while he's gone down to Hussler already this year, it has never occurred across the 2,400m they'll face in Caulfield. So don't be surprised to see this Gelding claiming the Cup.
