PUNTERS from around Australia and across the world have wagered nearly $2 million with leading election bookmaker Centrebet on the US presidential outcome, sending Democratic nominee Barack Obama to the starting line a heavily-backed $1.06 favourite, leaving Republican hopeful John McCain a long $8.50 outsider!

Centrebet media chief and political analyst Neil Evans said just under $1.3 million was the total hold in head-to-head betting, while nearly $600,000.00 was traded across the 50 US voting States, and in presidential "specials," when the official book was closed at midnight eastern time!

"It was a remarkable long-running betting event, but we are not surprised given we took a ground-breaking $5.2 million at the last Australian Federal election! We still had domestic and foreign election punters putting tens of thousands of dollars on Obama to win at prohibitive odds of between $1.06 and $1.09, but of course, there were plenty of smaller and middle ground punters who decided McCain had got out to outrageous odds and were prepared to back the big outsider!"

An astonishing near 9,000 individual bets were written on the US election, but the real "Christmas present" will come for those crystal-ball punters who backed Obama way back early in 2008! "You have to remember when it was an all-in candidacy book, Obama was originally around $9.00 when Hillary Clinton was the heavily-backed early favourite. But one thing has been clear right from the outset - this has been a long presidential run-up completely dominated by the Democratic Party!"

MEANWHILE, Centrebet reports a staggering 45 per cent increase on Melbourne Cup day turnover from 2007, with punters right across the board surging for value on Cup Day!

"Last year, we wrote nearly $2 million turnover on the Cup .. and nearly $5 million right across the Cup Day 10-race card, but this year, we are looking at probably $3.5 million and around $7 million, so the confirmation is there that punting is recession-proof, and in times of economic gloom, Australians turn to the punt to lift their spirits, and hopefully bulge their wallet," Evans said.
