Under-fire ALP cling to favouritism in the openeing Tasmanian election market!

The embattled Bartlett Labor government has opened a $1.70 favourite with leading election bookmaker Centrebet to hang on to power at the Tasmanian State election on March 20, but re-building Liberal is right in the battle at $2.10!
Centrebet media chief and political analyst Neil Evans said that of all the State elections scheduled for the next 18 months, this could be the closest, with Labor protecting a slender majority and seemingly losing ground to a Liberal opposition that lacks dynamics, but is cashing in on government stumbling and a lack of solidarity!
“Remember, since the 2006 election win, the ALP has lost Premier Lennon, two Deputy Premiers and several Minister and Legislative Counsillors. New leader David Barlett has fought hard to repair a badly-damaged Labor image, and on top of that, many commentators believe Labor is nearing the end of a long political cycle in Tasmania,” Evans said.
“There is a voter spill-over from the Lennon years, and the current front bench is reportedly in disarray. On the other side, the Liberal team is widely considered to lack policy impact and punch, although a sweeping victory by the Liberal Vanessa Goodwin in a recent Pembroke by-election on Hobart’s pivotal Eastern Shore must be a strong lead!”
Evans said Centrebet was almost obligated to open Labor a narrow favourite given it must obtain “some spin-off” from a dominant Federal party, but the betting would be fascinating, with every chance both parties could go to the starting line locked together!
“The Liberals, under Will Hodgman, have a big opportunity! It’s whether they are good and strong enough to take it! Minority governments, even a hung parliament are all on the radar!”
- Meanwhile, Federal Labor remains a heavily-backed $1.35 favourite on Centrebet to win the next Australian poll, with the Coalition ($3.10) at its biggest price since losing power late November, 2007!
Embattled Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull is $2.10 to be at the Coalition helm when Australia next votes, ahead of Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey ($2.75), but Tony Abbott ($6.50 into $5.75) and Andrew Robb ($6.00) have both been well supported by punters in the last couple of weeks! Former Treasurer Peter Costello has been specked from $15.00 into $12.00.
