How do we even start to talk about the importance of the matches taking place this weekend, from Friday night footy; where the Eels will battle the Panthers and the Cowboys verse the Broncos to Monday night footy where the Raiders will be out to upset the Knights. This will be a fast and entertaining weekend of Rugby League, Get On!
Let’s start with the NRL. Firstly you’ve got the clash of the most improved and in-form sides Parramatta Eels taking on the elusive Panthers. Jarryd Hayne is playing as if the NRL is standing around watching; he has amazing natural ability and like the greats can turn a game into a one-man show with devastating effect for his opponents – as was shown last week against the Tigers. The Panthers have firepower and more than enough talent in Jennings, Lewis and Sammut to run around their opposition at Parramatta Stadium tonight.
It will come down to who wants it more, who can play up to expectation and who will handle the pressure… Can the Panthers stop the Hayne pain while keeping check on Luke Burt?? It is sure to be a display of fireworks between these two sides as they push for a spot in the finals.
The Cowboys versus the Broncos will be another intense game for the viewers. The Cowboys have been inconsistent this season, showing glimpses of brilliance mainly on the back of Thurston. Matt Bowen hasn’t been able to assist as much as he would have liked making it harder and harder for the cowboys to find a way through the opposition’s line. The Broncos need the win, they are in the top-eight (7th), and need to remain in the pack. They are, and have been a quality side with quality players that can deliver from all angles of the park. Broncos have the experience and knowledge to grab the win at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Who will want it more? The Broncos desperately need the win to stay in the finals race and Thurston’s Cowboys will be out to spoil the party!
We can move on to the other form of the oval ball now and focus on the Tri - Nations. Australia really needs to pull something out the bag here. Whether or not they are preparing for the World Cup they need a win. The wait for a win against a solid rugby side has been too long. It must end. We were close against the All-Blacks and with Morne Steyn being dropped to the bench it might be the change needed for Australia to grab its first win of the tournament. Australia will rightfully be outsiders going in to the clash at Subiaco stadium where the big Sprinboks pack will be looking to pressure Australia at the ruck. The Springboks will also be bolstered by the return of Schalk Burger after an eight week suspension who will add some deadly power to the Springboks line.
Will Australia be able to restrict the kicking game of the Springboks and record their first win of the Tri-Nations? Or will the Springboks be ready to run rampant on Aussie soil?
Don’t Forget: The Round Ball is in motion once again… All the big European Leagues are starting back up: Seri A and La Liga and we have already been blessed with the start of the English premier League. It’s too early to draw any realistic conclusions however it would seem that Manchester United without Ronaldo will struggle more than they believed. You cannot just replace 30+ goals a season. Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham look strong early as do big money spenders Manchester City. There is a wide variety of betting markets and selections available for football around the world – Including next years 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Plus - don’t Miss Round 22 of the AFL heading into the finals.
