Leading election bookmaker Centrebet has tightened the NSW Coalition into a hot $1.22 in the wake of the John Della Bosca sex scandal, and re-ignited the packed ALP leader market with the former and current NSW Planning Ministers on top in the race to be at the helm when the State votes in 18 months!
Centrebet media chief and political analyst Neil Evans said Health Minister Della Bosca’s explosive resignation when seemingly in a position of strength to take the top job had momentarily released the pressure valve on embattled NSW Premier Nathan Rees, but was a “dagger in the heart” of any long-range Labor bid to retain power at the next election!
“The rumour mill has been in overdrive for some time, but the timing of this is a sensation, a massive free-kick for an already heavily-backed O’Farrell Opposition, but maybe a window of time for Premier Rees to stave off the wolves!” Evans said.
Evans said because Planning Minister Kenneally wasn’t in the original Labor Leader market when it first went public early February, punters had backed Any Other Candidate from $10.00 down to $3.85 only in the last few weeks of betting! “All the original action was for Premier Rees who, of course, opening a whopping $21.00 to still be in charge, and punters continually backed him down to $5.00,” Evans said. “At various times we have also taken significant money for Prisons Minister John Robertson, Deputy Leader Carmel Tebbutt, Mr Sartor, and even controversial Strathfield MP Virginia Judge!”
Because Mr Della Bosca hasn’t resigned totally from parliament, Centrebet said it was obligated to still leave him in the Leader’s book, although he officially drifts from $4.50 out to $26.00!
Centrebet has also opened a gender leader’s book with a Female Labor leader at the next NSW election a close $1.90 outsider, with Male quoted at $1.80!
Nearly $40,000.00 has already been wagered on the next NSW election with the Coalition commanding 90 per cent of the book! The Opposition had been continually backed from $1.47 down to $1.30 over the last couple of months, with Labor going from $2.68 out to $3.35 over the same time! “You can’t write a ticket on the ALP at any price at the moment,” Evans said.
Meanwhile, the shoe is well and truly on the other foot in Federal betting, with Labor firming today from $1.33 into $1.30 to win the next election, with Malcolm Turnbull’s struggling Coalition blowing from $3.10 out to $3.35! Nearly $65,000.00 has already been wagered!
