The rampant Adelaide Crows are on the verge of being the most heavily backed team in AFL history heading into the opening weekend of finals action after shortening into a red-hot $1.09 with leading bookmaker Centrebet to dust Essendon at AAMI Stadium tonight!
Centrebet media chief Neil Evans said money was continuing to pour on to the Crows at every option, with most big punters declaring the home side would cover every Line put up at the $1.91 price! "The original standard Line was the Bombers getting 36.5 points start, but 48 hours of sustained action has seen that Line blow to 40.5 - and it's going to get a whole lot bigger before the bounce tonight," Evans said. "Adelaide has developed this hard-ball reputation of grinding teams into the dirt once they gain control, and punters are tipping the Bombers are heading into a lost world before a parochial AAMI crowd! We've even had one AFL-mad client who is so fixated on a Crows massacre, he's backed the home side several times on 'Pick Your Own Line' from $3.05 giving Essendon 59.5 start up to $5.45 ( - 79.5)!"
Evans said hundreds of thousands of dollars would be placed on the Crows across all options, and they could even start as short as $1.06 - one of the skinniest elimination finals prices since fixed odds betting was introduced nearly 20 years ago! Adelaide opened $1.13 on Centrebet, while Essendon - without inspirational skipper Matthew Lloyd - has blown like a southern gale from $6.10 right out to $7.55, and will probably start around $9.00!
Centrebet has even posted the Crows a hot $1.90 favourite to boast the biggest winning margin across the first finals weekend, with Essendon a $51.00 outsider! The Crows are also $3.15 favourite to kick the highest team score of the eight sides, with the Bombers $67.00!
Meanwhile, Geelong has firmed from $1.88 into $1.85 on Centrebet to get the better of the Western Bulldogs who have eased from $1.93 to $1.97!
Well-backed Carlton remains locked at $1.91 alongside Brisbane for the GABBA elimination clash after shortening from an opening price of $2.00!
And St Kilda has shortened from $1.65 into $1.63 to beat Collingwood on Sunday, with the Magpies easing to $2.29!
