The relentless move for Gold Salute on Centrebet to win Saturday’s Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot has been stunning! Rarely do you see a horse open $5.00 and be hammered for three days straight into $3.60. One client has backed him to win nearly $50,000.00, and the money has come from every angle!
“I’m a big fan of the horse, but I fear he’s now going around way under the odds,” Centrebet media chief Neil Evans said. “No doubt, he is the “flashing light” runner in the field after a luckless third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes at Flemington where he bungled the start, but it will be crucial Damien Oliver digs him up from the middle gate to hold a position in the first half of the field. The trap around Ascot is the tight turn coming to the straight. Horses race very tight, and if you miss your run , it’s almost impossible to pick up again and win in a big field.”
The range of bets on Centrebet spread well into the tens of thousands, but in what looms as one of the biggest bookmaking ‘holds’ in Railway history, plenty of money has come now for talented mare Ortensia!
“It was like the alarm bells sounding when Ortensia drifted early from $7.50 out to $9.00 as the money poured in for the favourite, then punters climbed into Ortensia pushing her back into $8.00. “To me she’s the best value in the race, and I’m tipping Ortensia to put the knockers who say she won’t get a strong mile to rest,” Evans said. “I’m happy to see her drawn out in 12, and I believe she can sit three wide with cover and win. The pace will be solid, enough for Craig Williams to stay out of trouble and get her rolling at the 600m.”
Evans said there had been sharp money for All American who firmed from $6.50 into $5.50 before easing to $6.00, while last-start Group 3 winner on the track Elliotto has been well backed at big odds, firming from $17.00 to $16.00 Both Tarzi and Spirited One ($16.00 to $14.00) have also been well specked at double figure odds, but the surprise for me is the lack of support for Grand Nirvana ($8.50 out to $9.50), although a bet of $1,000.00 arrived a short time ago. “Grand Nirvana is one of WA’s best milers, who was luckless behind Elliotto last start, and I believe he’s one of the few genuine local hopes in the race.
Elsewhere at Ascot, punters have plunged hard on the Adam Durant-trained last-start winner Proart, his price tumbling from an opening $6.50 into $4.75! “Apart from some good money for West River Charley, everything else in the race has been easy with the huge backing for Proart.
One Centrebet punter has launched an almost single-handed assault on Freetime to win the fifth race over 1200m. A last-start winner, Freetime has firmed from an opening $9.00 into $7.50, with the client unloading several thousand over a few days.
And punters also moved quickly to back another last-start winner from the Durrant team Ma Chienne in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) firming from $7.00 down to $6.00, before easing to $6.50!
At Sandown, in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) the best-backed runner is Rhyno Chaser – a close second to Tintern on the track last Saturday – who firms from $9.00 down to $8.00! “This should be a very competitive betting race, although I’m very keen on Rose Syrah finally breaking a run of outs after her somewhat unlucky and fast-finishing second behind Dane Julia at this track last start. She’s improving all the time, is well weighted and perfectly drawn, and I’ve marked Rose Syrah as one of the better bets on the card,” Evans said.
