Leading election bookmaker Centrebet has shortened the likelihood of a double dissolution early election into a $1.50 favourite after Tony Abbott’s shock elevation to the leadership of the Liberal Party, despite punters backing Joe Hockey from $1.80 into $1.28 to take the reins in the last 24 hours of betting!

Centrebet media chief Neil Evans said long-serving MP Mr Abbott, who was well backed when he first made it publicly known he would challenge Malcolm Turnbull, shortened from $4.50 into $3.00, but eased back out to $4.35 when the support came late for Mr Hockey! “This is a tidal-like reminder of the party’s emphatic stance on the ETS legislation. The vote to elevate Mr Abbott in front of Mr Hockey is a clear-cut protective stance on the Coalition’s anti-carbon scheme policy!”

Centrebet also shortened the already heavily-backed Labor government from $1.16 into $1.14 to win the next election, with the imploding Coalition easing dramatically from $4.75 to $5.15! Labor already holds more than 85 per cent of nearly $100,000.00 traded!

The Coalition Leader market has returned with Mr Abbott a $1.25 favourite, Mr Hockey at $3.00, with Any Other Candidate priced at $6.50! “We still don’t rule Mr Hockey out of the frame, but he will only be a good bet if Labor goes the full term, if we are looking at a double dissolution election than Mr Abbott is the obvious hot favourite,” Evans said.
