THE HEAVYWEIGHTS!
The countdown is on to the greatest sporting show on the planet – football’s World Cup – so just where is the punting value, which nation is under the odds, which ones are over, and who will ultimately land on that final stage to fight for the globe’s ultimate prize! European champion Spain is Centrebet’s current $5.50 favourite ahead of footballing giant Brazil ($6.00) and England ($6.50)! The first two are “backable,” while the English are typically under the odds! The best value for me, though, is on the next line where Argentina sits at $11.00! I’d be taking some of that now, and for those smaller punters looking for some real value at big odds, the $67.00 on Centrebet about both Ghana and Serbia is not silly!
GROUP & FED WINNERS!
Among a record number of World Cup markets on Centrebet, the ‘Winning Group’ market has Group G a $4.15 favourite, and with Brazil, Portugal and the Ivory Coast on deck here, that’s the best bet! But as for the ‘Winning Federation,’ I would go around the $1.42 about UEFA Europe, and rather take the $3.30 about Conmebol Sth America! As for the top African nation, punters can cover all bases by backing both Ivory Coast at $2.10 and Ghana ($5.50). I don’t think any other country is a chance!
THE GROUPS!
In Group A, I’m tipping somewhat of an upset, not so much who goes through to the round of 16, but the finishing order! Runner-up in 2006, France’s preparation has continually been stained by that infamous Thierry Henry handball against the Irish to snatch qualification – and somehow embattled coach Raymond Domenech is still in charge despite a nightmare Euro 2008 campaign. The French have speed – and game-breakers – but they’re vulnerable! Battle-hardened Mexico always possesses skill on the ball, and can top the group, with the French clinging on to second. Despite the roar of the home crowd and the guile of Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, host nation South Africa will just miss, along with Uruguay who only reached the finals in a play-off win over Costa Rica!
Group B is dominated by South American powerhouse Argentina who should win all three matches, and progress on top. While their preparation has been lacklustre in places, the brilliance of players like Lionel Messi is made for the ultimate stage. The battle for second spot will be tight, and may even come down to a single goal. I think Nigeria – back in the finals after missing out in 2006 – can scrape through! They play with flare, and in striker Obafemi Martins and Chelsea-based midfielder John Obi Mikel, there is real speed. The Nigerians have more goals in them than Greece, while South Korea will struggle right from the outset!
In Group C, England, dominant in qualifying under masterful coach in Fabio Capello, has yet another dream draw in the group stage, and should not lose a game! Wayne Rooney could cut this group to pieces, although perennial qualifier USA should push the Poms, and qualify through at the same time. Algeria, having reached their first finals in 24 years, and European minnow Slovenia, are both just making up the numbers!
One of the toughest groups of the World Cup is Group D where Australia has to fight past the ‘brick wall’ that is Germany, the flambouyant Serbia – playing in their first World Cup as an independent nation – and Ghana! Four teams all under a FIFA ranking of 40, with the Germans at six! The Serbians have real quality in midfield and a world class central defender in Manchester Utd’s Nemanja Vidic. The Serbs ability to score more goals could see them finish top if they at least share the points with Germany! These two should go through, although Ghana will be threat, while Australia will struggle to win a game!
In Group E, The Netherlands’ talented squad will be hoping to pitch-fork off a blistering showing at Euro 2008 before typically crashing out in the semi-finals. The Dutch cruised through World Cup qualifying and should have little trouble progressing here. The battle for the second spot will be tight between unpredictable Cameroon, with Inter Milan goal-scoring machine Samuel Eto’o up front, and Denmark who won a relatively strong group in qualifying. I’m tipping Cameroon to sneak into the last 16, while the Japanese, who have lost midfield thrust, and have been flat in key lead-up matches, should be the whipping boys of the group!
Reigning World Cup champion and FIFA number four Italy should stroll through Group F, and is likely to be joined in the round of 16 by Paraguay who always play above themselves at the World Cup and possess a genuine goal-poacher in Manchester City’s Roque Santa Cruz! Both New Zealand, in their first World Cup since 1982, and Slovakia, lack depth and experience at this level, and will battle for third place.
The so-called Group of Death in Group G is headed by traditional World Cup powerhouse Brazil, which topped South American qualifying. A slightly more structured approach under coach and former World Cup-winning captain Dunga, Brazil can still be lethal in the final third. The battle for second place looms between European giant Portugal, who struggled into the World Cup often without injured star Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ivory Coast, which has powered its way to the top rung of African football via the attacking feats of Chelsea duo Didier Drogba and Saloman Kalou, and Barcelona’s Yaya Toure. The odd nation out is North Korea who will be lucky to gain a point. Brazil is a ‘special’ to go through, and I’m tipping Ivory Coast to join them.
Finally, heavyweight Spain – fresh from a long-awaited win at Euro 2008 and a perfect World Cup qualifying campaign - is the overwhelming favourite to top Group H. The Spanish have great depth and skill right around the park, but in a weakish group, the battle for second place is wide open. The improving Switzerland looks best equipped, although Chile’s confidence has never been higher after finishing second to Brazil in qualifying. Minnow Honduras will miss out, but I’m tipping the Swiss to scrape through to the round of 16!
OPENING MULTI!
AND as for a first-up three leg multi, take Mexico at $2.40 to beat South Africa, Serbia and Ghana to play a Draw at $3.25 and The Netherlands at $1.77 to beat Denmark! It’s worth $7.22!
