Labor is clinging to as little as a single seat majority ahead of Saturday’s Federal election as former tennis pro John Alexander takes favouritism to snatch Bennelong in a remarkable betting turnaround, according to Centrebet’s media chief and political analyst Neil Evans
THE 5 SET SHOWDOWN IN BENNELONG HAS SEEN THE COALITION BREAK SERVE IN THE FIFTH SET! AFTER BEING CANED IN THE OPENING 2 SETS, ALEXANDER HAS CHARGED BACK, & NOW LEADS 1-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 3-2
Despite Labor maintaining clear favouritism, and the Coalition threatening to get right back into the fight in head-to-head betting, Mr Evans refutes the latest JWS Research seat poll numbers that say the Labor govt could somehow lose critical Sydney marginals Bennelong and Lindsay and still hold a 4-seat majority!
“It’s clear to me that if the government gives back both these vital seats, it will struggle to form a majority government,” he said. “For a start, the polling company totalled Labor on 79 and the Coalition 68 – which adds up to 147, even though there are three Independents certain to retain their seats, and the Greens’ Adam Bandt heading for victory in Melbourne! That leaves the major parties playing for only 146 seats when I went to school!”
Evans said their assessment of key marginals across Qld, NSW and even Victoria was literally “off the money!”
JWS is tipping Labor captures the key NSW seats of Cowper and Paterson, yet Evans said, the National’s Luke Hartsuyker ($1.60 into $1.15) is one of the most heavily backed candidates in the country, while Liberal Bob Baldwin has shortened from $1.55 into $1.32 to win Paterson. “Against that, to say Labor will lose the seat of Brisbane is not supported.
Arch Bevis remains a $1.40 favourite, and there’s been no real move for Liberal challenger Theresa Gambaro ($2.77)! Labor should pick up McEwen in Victoria, with Rob Mitchell ($1.70 into $1.30) very heavily backed to beat Cameron Caine ($3.10), but JWS says La Trobe and Dunkley are going to the ALP as well, yet the Lib’s Jason Wood ($1.57) is highly fancied by punters and Bruce Billson is a red-hot $1.18 to retain Dunkley,” Evans said. “And JWS has Boothby going to Labor – we still have the Lib’s Andrew Southcott a $1.46 favourite!
A short time ago after several thousand more in very smart money former tennis pro John Alexander seized favouritism at $1.77 to win back Bennelong for the Coalition! “This is the biggest turnaround across the nation! Maxine McKew is now the narrow $1.98 outsider after punters turned this crunch and historic seat on its head in the last four days!”
Outright bets have arrived this morning for the Coalition of $5,000.00, $2,000.00 and $1,000.00 at $3.62, but last night wagers of $13,000.00 and $11,000.00 arrived for Labor at $1.28!
In continued betting support today, the Liberal’s former Greenway MP Louise Markus is now $1.34 (from $1.47) to win the vital far-western Sydney seat of Macquarie after bets of $1500.00 at $1.52, $1,000.00 at $1.50 and another surge from a regular client from Sydney’s east who has unloaded nearly $5,000.00 across 12 separate wagers on Ms Markus from $1.70 down to her current price! “Not only does this punter think Ms Markus will win, he believes she’s been well over the odds for weeks,” Evans said.
The news is equally bad for Labor in the south-western Sydney seat of Macarthur where ALP candidate Nicholas Bleasdale has blown from $1.92 out to $3.10 as further smart money for Liberal Russell Matheson has seen him rocket in from $1.80 into $1.33!
And in the critical south-western Sydney seat of Hughes, the Liberal’s Craig Kelly has firmed from $1.75 into $1.70 after several thousand dollars in “connected” money was wagered!
