This week we travel to San Antonio, Texas for the 2nd event in the Texas Swing

This week we travel to San Antonio, Texas for the 2nd event in the Texas Swing - the Valero Texas Open. The history of this tournament dates back to the 1920's when it was originally known as the Texas Open. Over the years, even though many different courses have hosted this event, it has always been played in San Antonio. The previous winners of this event have included Snead, Hogan and Palmer in past times ,whilst Adam Scott is the defending champion after claiming the title by one stroke last year closing with a 5 under par 67 on the new course. What should be noted is the new date for this Tournament. Last year in the schedule, it was played in Mid May, whilst this year the event has been bumped up the schedule to feature more prominently (directly after the Masters). That will be very significant in assessing the potential hopefuls this week. (Normally the Verizon Heritage played at Harbour town links fills this slot and that event will now be played next week).

The Course The AT&T TPC San Antonio Oaks Course was carefully designed by Australian Greg Norman in consultation with current tour pro Sergio García. Norman's design philosophy is typically cognisant of existing environmental features and displays a respect for the local natural beauty on offer. It contains 58 bunkers and 3 water hazards. The golf course winds through Texas Hill Country oak trees and has just 100 feet of elevation change between the highest and lowest point. "The topographic subtleties of the rolling Texas Hill Country terrain, framed by magnificent stands of mature live oaks, create a pristine natural setting that is as playable as it is beautiful." - Greg Norman

Having looked at the course, I can understand why Scott won this event last year and Baddeley finished tied 3rd. There is a distinctly Australian feel to the layout which offers many similar characteristics to that of the sand belt courses in Australia. Scott himself made mention of this very fact in his post victory interview last year.

The layout of over 7,400 yards includes tree-lined fairways, enormous bunkers and big rolling greens that will certainly be a challenge. The course is in fantastic condition and features four different types of grasses adding to the ultimate playability and depth. Three out of the four Par 3's play over 200 yards and the shortest of the Par 5's will play around 567 yards. Whilst the Par 4 17th will, depending on tee placements, offer eagle chances as a drive-able par 4. It is still a relatively new course (only opened in January 2010) & there is still some maturing left in both the fairways and greens and this course will get tougher as it matures and the hazards become more prominent. Both Scott Piercy and Ryan Palmer shot 64's around this venue last year indicating a good score is on offer for those able to capitalise with good ball striking and putting.
