Centrebet offers Oscars betting odds at the Academy Awards and we don't close the books until Hollywood's biggest names take their seats at the Kodak Theatre. The Academy - or to use its full name - the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - began the Awards in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Two hundred and fifty movie buffs paid $10 to attend the events which was not broadcast in any form. How times have changed. Now the event is invitation only and millions of people watch it unfold on television.

Academy Awards History - Oscars Odds Offered On:

One of the world's oldest online betting agencies, Centrebet has offered Oscars odds on every Academy Awards since the 1993 event in which Schindler's List won Best Picture. Centrebet Oscars betting odds are offered on the six most prestigious races - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress - although it does dip into other categories such as Best Animated Feature Film and Best Foreign Language Film from time to time. The Official Oscars website provides more detailed information on nominees for the Academy Awards.

No-one is sure as to how the Academy Awards got its Oscars nickname. The most plausible tale is that a journalist overheard Academy librarian Margaret Herrick say that the famous golden statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar. Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky in 1934 used the term in reference to Katherine Hepburn's first Best Actress victory. The Academy itself did not begin using the nickname until 1939 - now it is globally recognised.

What is clear is who votes. Membership of the Academy is limited to those who have achieved the highest level of distinction in the arts and sciences of motion pictures. Members represent 14 branches - Actors, Art Directors, Cinematographers, Directors, Documentary, Executives, Film Editors, Music, Producers, Public Relations, Short Films and Feature Animation, Sound, Visual Effects and Writers. Currently there are about 5,700 voting members.

Some Past Big Oscars Winners:

The Academy gives prizes for the outstanding individual or collective efforts of the year in up to 25 categories. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won 11 Oscars in 2004 but it did not win in all of the following races: Best Actor; Best Actress; Best Director; Best Picture; Best Screenplay. Only three films have swept those five important contests: It Happened One Night (1934); One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975); and The Silence Of The Lambs (1991).
