AFC Asian Cup 2007 Tournament Favourites
Back-to-back reigning champs Japan will be looking to three-peat and this seems a likely outcome as the J-League and Japanese players continue to grow in prestige and standing in the elite circles of world football.
Traditional powerhouses Korea Republic and Saudi Arabia will meet eachother in the group stage, with three time Asian Cup winners Iran also taking on an emerging Asian contender, China in the group stage.
The Socceroos' group of Iraq, Oman and Thailand does not present any major threats for the Aussies, but a combination of the humid sub-tropical conditions, the absence of several key players and burn out after three years without a break would suggest we will see a very different Socceroos outfit to the one Guus Hiddink took to the final 16 in the World Cup.
Make sure you keep an eye on the hosts. History has shown that the hosts have placed 10 times in the last 13 Cups and 6 times they've ended up winners. Despite the relatively low rankings of the hosts compared with those of the traditional powerhouses, environmental factors and home pride could prove a huge factor in propelling one of these South East Asian minnows towards Asian football's biggest prize.
