BRITISH OPEN GOLF BETTING

BRITISH OPEN GOLF BETTING - THE BASICS

The brainchild of Colonel James Fairlie and the Earl of Eglinton, the British Open dates back to 1860 when Willie Park won a 36-hole event at Prestwick. Only eight golfers participated in the first British Open championship. Now many thousands of amateurs and professionals enter the oldest golf tournament of them all with 156 qualifying for the four rounds that attract a global television audience.

The British Open is one of golf's four majors - the other three are the US Masters, US Open and US PGA Championship - meaning that, each year, the assembled field is a collection of the best golfing talent on the planet.

Apart from fame and fortune, the winner of the Open Championship, as it is also known, receives the silver Claret Jug, a prize as sought after as the famed green jacket at Augusta. Each year the current champion must return the jug, but gets to keep an Open Championship medal.

It is a little known fact that the original trophy awarded for winning the British Open was a rich Moroccan-leather belt, embellished with a silver buckle and emblems. The Claret Jog was introduced in its place in 1871 after the belt was permanently awarded to Tom Morris Junior following his third consecutive British Open win.

BRITISH OPEN GOLF BETTING - BET TYPES

Centrebet's British Open golf betting odds make it possible for you to bet on the Open Championship's winner or to back your preferred competitor to finish in the top five places.

British Open golf odds also include selected head-to-head markets where punters bet on the lowest scorer in a two- or three-golfer playing group, as well as, highest-placed competitor from selected countries.

Centrebet offers these markets on all the golf majors, offering US Open prices, US Masters betting odds, and US PGA Championship books, as well as for all the weekly tournaments on the PGA, LPGA and European tours.

BRITISH OPEN GOLF BETTING - LIKELY WINNERS

Golfers with imagination and the ability to control their golf ball in howling winds are the players to watch when the British Open is played on links courses close to the sea. You can almost guarantee that British and Irish golfers grew up playing on coastal links, whereas sea breezes and savage bunkers scare the living daylights out of those who honed their skills on planned courses far from the coast. That said, the allure of golf's majors is that they infrequently go to plan as evidenced by (often unheralded) American players’ dominance of the event over the past 10 years.
