DERBY DAY HISTORY

Derby Day is a day full of tradition, held on the Saturday prior to Melbourne Cup Day and a great way to get ready for Spring Carnival’s grandest occasion.

Derby Day has always been for racing purists since it started in 1855.  Race Six, the main event for the day, is a classic Group 1 staying test for three-year-olds over 2500 metres at Flemington Racecourse.

2006 saw the Flemington attendance record smashed as over 129,000 showed up for the day.  The previous record was the 2003 Melbourne Cup.
