Golf Betting – The Basics

Golf betting exploded when subscription television channels started broadcasting tournaments from around the world into the living rooms of armchair sports fans. Suddenly it became much easier to track the form of golfers on the various international tours and golf enthusiasts also found that having a bet enhanced their enjoyment greatly.

Golf Betting – Championships

Betting on golf accounts for a significant percentage of Centrebet's annual turnover and the bookmaker quotes odds on all PGA Tour and European Tour tournaments. These include the four major events:

US Masters

Betting on the US Masters golf tournament is one of the most popular activities of Centrebet's valued clients. The US Masters attracts a select field to the Augusta National Golf Club which Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts built in the 1930s. Tiger Woods has won the Masters on four occasions since 1997 and holds the event record.

US Open

Centrebet's 2007 US Open golf betting odds make it possible for punters to bet on what must be one of the toughest tests in the world of sport. It is no exaggeration to say that most competitors view par as a score that could win the first prize, such are the lengths that the United States Golf Association goes to challenge the field.

British Open

The brainchild of Colonel James Fairlie and the Earl of Eglinton, the British Open dates back to 1860 when Willie Park won a 36-hole event at Prestwick. Apart from fame and fortune, the winner of the Open Championship, as it is also known, receives the silver Claret Jug, a prize as sought after as the famed green jacket. Each year the current champion must return the jug, but gets to keep an Open Championship medal.

US PGA Championship

The US PGA Golf Championship began during World War I, with James Barnes winning the inaugural event in 1916. Back then it was a match play tournament, with the switch to stroke play occurring in 1958 when Dow Finsterwald finished 14 under par.

Centrebet also lists prices on Champions Tour, LPGA Tour and selected regional contests such as the Australian Open, plus the Ryder Cup and other international team competitions. Basically, Centrebet offers odds on every decent golf event.

Golf Betting – Bet Types

There is much more to betting on golf than having a stab at predicting the tournament winner, although it is one of the most popular of Centrebet's golf books. Professional punters like 72-hole championship match betting lines in which Centrebet pits two supposedly evenly matched golfers against each other. Recreational punters prefer markets that take less time, which is why two or three-ball bets continue to grow in popularity. Backing Padraig Harrington to shoot a lower score than his playing partner is an example of a two-ball bet.
