Caulfield races were the place to be on the weekend with four potential stars winning in consecutive races on the card. In a day where the markets for the Cox Plate, Caulfield and Melbourne Cups shifted dramatically, Caulfield Guineas day will be remembered as “moving day”.
First up was the unearthing of brilliant sprinter Black Caviar. The Peter Moody trained lightly raced four year old showed electrifying pace from the barriers, taking advantage of the inside draw to hold a slender lead over rivals. Tully Dreamer gave the odds on favourite no favours by engaging in a speed battle from the 600 metres, but in the end Black Caviar never got out of first gear, cruising to the line hard held to win by over a length to Winter King, who battled on well to finish in second position. General Truce ran on from the back of the field to fill in the minor placings.
The win is likely to set up a mouth watering showdown between the unbeaten Black Caviar and the John McNair trained Hay List in the coming weeks.
Second up was the phenomenal win of So You Think in the Yalumba Stakes. Taking on a small field, the Bart Cummings trained four year old sat in second position behind the solid clip of Red Ruler, until launching an attack from the 600 metres to come away with a dominant 3 ¼ length win over the fast finishing Alcopop. Second favourite Whobegotyou stalked So You Think throughout the race, but was unable to match the electrifying turn of foot of the odds on favourite in the straight. The win has put last year’s Cox Plate winner into a dominant $1.75 favourite with Centrebet to go back to back, shortening from $2.50 over the weekend. Also, with connections indicating the horse will likely run in the Melbourne Cup too, Centrebet has dramatically shortened its price from $11 to $6 for the horse to give Bart yet another Melbourne Cup.
Third up was the highly impressive More Joyous in the Toorak handicap, taking her tally to eight straight wins. The Gai Waterhouse trained horse was one of the only horses on the day to defy the race day pattern and win off the speed, coming from midfield on the turn to record a dominant win over We’re Gonna Rock and Poor Judge. To add even more merit to her win, the mare copped a bump on the turn from Gold Salute that appeared to unbalance the four year old as her hind legs slipped.
This win sets up another mouth watering clash with So You Think in the Cox Plate, with Waterhouse saying “I’ve got two weeks to think about how to beat So You Think”. More Joyous is listed second favourite with Centrebet for the Cox Plate at $6.
Fourth up was the Caulfield Guineas, which saw the Peter Moody trained Anacheeva take out the event after getting the perfect run in transit from the inside gate. Anacheeva has been unbeaten this preparation, with Moody immediately saying after the race that the horse was “the best three year old colt in the land”.
Race favourite Ilovethiscity was disappointing in the run, finishing a weakening tenth position, while second favourite Toorak Toff was unlucky in the run, finishing a credible fourth after a wide run in transit.
