PERTH WILDCATS FAVOURED TO REPEAT AS NBL CHAMPIONS
As the National Basketball League gears up for the tip-off of the 2010/11iiNet NBL Championship season on October 15, the Perth Wildcats are currently favoured to go back-to-back defend their title and win an unprecedented sixth NBL trophy.
Last season import Kevin Lisch scored 29 points to lead the Wildcats to a 96-72 win over the Wollongong Hawks in Game Three of the 2010 NBL Grand Final series at Challenge Stadium in Perth to become the first team ever to win five NBL titles.
According to the latest betting odds on the Centrebet website, Lisch and Perth ($3.50) are now favoured to win a record-breaking sixth NBL title.
Just behind the Wildcats in the betting are the Gold Coast Blaze ($4.50), who last year were swept 2-0 in the best-of-three Semi Finals by Perth.
The Townsville Crocodiles raised eyebrows in the off-season when they decided against re-signing league Most Valuable Player Corey Williams, but the punters clearly like the make-up of the new-look Crocs’ roster. The team, which will be headed by a new import tandem of Gabe ‘G-Force’ Freeman and Will Blalock, is rated as the third most likely to take home the hardware at $6.50.
Last season the Adelaide 36ers suffered through their darkest campaign in history, finishing with a league-worst 10-18 record and taking out the wooden spoon for the first time ever. Despite having a new coach in Marty Clarke and having gone an impressive 3-1 in pre-season matches thus far, the punters remain wary of the 36ers and have installed the South Australian side as the club least likely to win the title at $17.00.
All nine NBL teams travel to the Northern territory next week to play in the 2010 NBL Top End Challenge pre-season tournament.
