In preparation for betting on the Athens Olympic Games, Centrebet has provided a summary of the best and worst of the athletics betting from the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Olympic Athletics betting in Sydney 2000 for Centrebet saw our big results being the wins of Nils Schumann in the mens 800 metres, Kon the Greek, Konstantinos Kenteris in the mens 200 metres and Millon Wolde in the 5000 metres, while the bad ones were Anier Garcia winning the 110 mens hurdles, Gabriela Szabo in the womens 5000 metres, and Rueben Kosgei winning the 3000 metres steeplechase. Garcia had been well backed before the games started, and we took a bet of $8000 at $2.50 (6/4) when the final field was known. It was all over early as Garcia began best and stayed there, giving a faultless exhibition. Szabo took out the 5,000m proving too good for Sonia O'Sullivan. We again saw plenty of money including a bet of $6000, for Szabo at $3.50 (5/2) to win the 1500 metres, and she was the best of good things beaten when she nearly fell before flying home for third behind Nouria Merah-Benida. In the mens steeplechase, Kosgei had always been second pick at around the $3 (2/1) mark, but a bet of $5,500 just before race time ensured he ran our worst result.

Former Kenyan, and now Danish resident, Wilson Kipketer seemed to run a poor tactical race back in 2000 when a shock runner up to Germany's Nils Schumann in the mens 800 metres. Kipketer had always been favourite, but we couldn't keep our Danish clients off him in the 24 hours leading up to race time, with the largest of those bets being 100,000 Danish Krone ($AUD 25,000) at $1.40 (2/5). Only a little over $500 was bet on Schumann, and we were happy to see him charge away with gold.

It was an identical set of circumstances in the mens 200 metres, where everybody dismissed the chances of Kenteris who had previously won his semi final in impressive fashion. It seemed as though he had no form at all coming into the 2000 Games as we didn't have him listed in our original list of 75 possibilities, so it really was an outstanding performance.

Millon Wolde's win in the 5000 metres wasn't as big a shock as he was third pick at $7.50 (13/2), but nobody would hear of Algerian Ali Sadi Sief being beaten. He was backed from $1.65 (4/6) into $1.35 (4/11), and after dictating the pace in front he found nothing in the home straight when challenged by Wolde.
