Football - the world's most popular sport and one of the first to become professional, sits uneasily on the programme of a movement foundered on the amateur ethos. Now this has all changed, the tournament does include professionals but is effectively the world under-23 world championships. The under-23 age limit does allow for three over age players.

In 1920, Belgium won when Czechoslovakian players walked off the field in protest over the refereeing.
Uruguay won gold in 1924 and 1928 and then went on to win the first World Cup in 1930.
In Berlin in 1936, Italian players held the German referee's arms down and covered his mouth to prevent him from sending off a team mate in a game against the USA.
In a quarter final match between Peru and Austria, although Peru won 4-2 they were disqualified because an Austrian player was attacked by a Peruvian fan. The action provoked a diplomatic incident. With Greek fans revelling in their team's sensational run to the European football championship title, the Athens Olympic tournament is building up to be a very entertaining event, even though Cameroon, Nigeria and five times World Cup winners Brazil have failed to qualify.
