Sports Odds From Centrebet, The Australian Online Bookmaker
17th June 2008, by Taylor Luk
Sports Odds refer to the prices a bookmaker sets based on the chances of an event occurring. Sport odds can be written in a range of formats. This includes decimals, fractions and percentages. The most universally accepted format today is the decimal format for sports odds.
For example, if Liverpool are 1.90 to win a match, then a bet of $1 will return $1.90 if Liverpool won the match. Following on from this, a bet of $25 would return 25 x $1.90 = $47.50 should Liverpool win the match.
Sports odds are calculated by the bookmaker in such a way as to provide a theoretical percentage of profit to the bookmaker. If the sports odds are set so that the betting percentage is too high, the chances are that the prices will not be attractive to the punter. On the other hand if they are set so that the betting percentage is too low, there is a higher probability that the bookmaker will suffer a loss on the book.
Can you beat the bookmaker's sports odds? The answer is that some punters do so consistently. This requires a good enough knowledge to identify a good bet and also the patience and self-control to only bet of these events. One theory is that you should only bet a small percentage of your bank, say 2%. This way you will only lose small amounts each time. Conversely, you will only increase your bank slowly as well. Just remember that a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease means you are worse off by 25%!
Centrebet provides sports odds on a large number of fixtures per week. We open over 3000 books in an average week. Soccer is by far the most popular sport for punters and fans. Because this is a low scoring game, results are quite unpredictable. For this reason, a greater importance is placed on the season-long championship rather than individual matches. In knock out competitions such as the World Cup, one unlucky match can mean the Cup run is over!
Centrebet also offers sports odds on 'novelty bets' such as elections, Academy Awards, Big Brother evictions and wife carrying competitions. How the bookmakers frame the books for these events remains a mystery for many.
