Race History
The Group One Stradbroke Handicap was first run in 1890. The 200 sovereign prize was taken out by Pyrrhus. The Stradbroke was named after Lord Stradbroke, a relative of Admiral Rous, an architect of the weight for age scale. In 1996, the Stradbroke Handicap reached elite status when the club raised the stakes to one million dollars.
