2007 SUPER 14 RUGBY UNION BETTING PREVIEW
SUPER 14 RUGBY BETTING - THE BASICS
Centrebet offers Super 14 betting as part of its wider range of rugby union betting and better prices on all the world rugby that matters.
Super 14 is a round-robin tournament in which each of the teams play 13 matches during the preliminary phase. The top four sides at the end of the round-robin phase qualify for the semi-finals in which first entertains fourth and second hosts third. The semi-final winners contest the final, with the highest surviving seed staging the championship game at a stadium of its choosing.
Teams get four points for a win, two for a draw and none for a loss. A bonus scheme operates to reward teams for attacking play and marginal defeats. Sides receive one point for scoring four or more tries or for a loss by seven or less.The round-robin draw is of huge importance as it determines which sides get seven home matches and those receiving the unwanted challenge of seven road-trip matches.
SUPER 14 RUGBY BETTING - THE TEAMS
The introduction of the Western Force and the Central Cheetahs has added extra completixity to the competition which launched first as the Super 10 in 1993 and expanded to the Super 12 in 1996.
Super 14 competition is overseen by SANZAR, the South African, New Zealand and Australian Rugby Organisation. Super 14 rugby is the Southern Hemisphere's premier provincial competition that showcases the best running rugby of;
| Australian Sides: | New Zealand Sides: | South African Sides: |
| ACT Brumbies | Auckland Blues | Blue Bulls (Pretoria) |
| NSW Waratahs | Canterbury Crusaders | The Cheetahs (Bloemfontein) |
| QLD Reds | Otago Highlanders | The Lions (Johannesburg) |
| Western Force | Waikato Chiefs | The Sharks (Natal) |
| Wellington Hurricanes | The Stormers (Cape Town) |
SUPER 14 RUGBY BETTING - BET TYPES
Super 14 betting will continue in the same format as past Super 12 rugby betting. Centrebet's Super 14 betting options for the round-robin phase include;
- head-to-head or win-draw-win match winner
- first scoring play - type
- first try scorer
- half-time/full time doubles
- (winning) margin betting
From time to time and during the finals series these Super 14 betting options are extended to include;
- first team to score
- total game score
- in-the-run head-to-head prices
Punters can usually find (mostly live) television coverage of the Super 14 to assist them with calculating form, as well as a host of online news sites, fan sites and official club home pages.
Now that the Super 14 draw is known Super 14 futures betting is available for punters. Future odds options include;
- Super 14 winner and wooden spooner
- teams to make the semi-finals
- grand final participants
- highest-placed team from each country
- nationality of the winning province
In addition rugby punters may like to place a doubles wager on the eventual winners of the Super 14 and either the Australian NRL or Australian AFL football competitions. Premiership doubles punting is an excellent way for the non-professional punter to add excitement, and a potential windfall, to their favourite football seasons. To illustrate the point, take a moment to consider the Centrebet punter who backed the unlikely combination of the Sydney Swans and Wests Tigers, as an AFL/NRL premiership double, for a win of close to AUD$1,000,000 from his AUD$700 stake.
SUPER 14 RUGBY BETTING - PAST WINNERS
Unsurprisingly the Super 12 competition was largely dominated by teams from New Zealand. Following successive trophies to the Auckland Blues after the inception of Super 12, the Canterbury Crusaders dominated the competition. In 10 years of Super 12 competition the team from the South Island played in all but one of the last eight grand finals, winning five titles.During this period the Brumbies were the best-performing Australian side. With two titles and three runners-up awards the ACT franchise was the only non-Kiwi team to taste Super 12 glory.
The inaugural Super 14 Grand Final was an all-New Zealand affair with home team, Crusaders continuing their fine rugby tradition with a win over the Hurricanes.
