17th June 2008, by Taylor Luk

Centrebet will again be offering SuperBowl XXXIX betting odds, on the NFL Championship game to be played on Sunday February 6, 2005 at Alltel Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida. Since the purchase of Centrebet by Sportodds in August 2003, Centrebet has opened its doors to the American punters and our United States membership grows daily.

SuperBowl was a nickname for the AFL-NFL Championship which has gradually been accepted as the legitimate name. Since the merger between AFL and NFL, the SuperBowl has become the NFL Championship Game played between the NFC and AFC champions. Latest team and player information is available at the Official NFL Superbowl site.

Superbowl Odds & Betting Review:

New England were odds on to win their second Super Bowl title in three years when the Patriots tackled Carolina, a team written off as no-hopers before the season began in September, at Houston's Reliant Stadium. The Panthers were 81.00 shots at the beginning of the National Football League campaign and were trading at double-figure odds at the turn of the year as punters refused to place their faith in a team that won only one regular season game two years ago, a season that ended with an embarrassing 38-6 loss to their Super Bowl opponents. Punters were backing New England to cover our six-and-a-half-point spread in a relatively low-scoring game.

As is the case with most SuperBowl finals, we found the underdogs, in this case Carolina, very easy to lay at around the $3.20 mark. Some of the larger bets included $15,000 and $12,000, both coming from Canada. One large bet of $25,000 was taken for New England when they touched $1.35, but we found that the bulk of support for the Patriots was on them to cover a 6.5 point handicap, which looked a certainty until Carolina drew level in the final few minutes. Provided New England didn't score a touchdown we were in 'safe' territory, and although the favourites won the game, Centrebet recorded a very good win.

There was hardly a corner of the globe that we didn't see a bet come in from on the SuperBowl, with our two biggest 'handicap' bets, both of $USD 25,000, coming from the USA, while one Norwegian client went against the normal trend of 'favourite and overs' by coupling up Carolina with the start into the over 37.5 points. His bet of 80,000 NOK ($16,000) yielded a tidy win of just over $43,000.

All the talk following the 2004 Superbowl was about Janet Jackson's 'revelation'. As they say 'only in America'............... Anyway, bookies got a dream result on the Superbowl when New England kicked a field goal in the dying seconds to win 32-29.

Last 6 Years Super Bowl Results:

2004 New England 32, Carolina 29
2003 Tampa Bay 48, Oakland 21
2002 New England 20, St. Louis 17
2001 Baltimore 34, N.Y. Giants 7
2000 St. Louis 23, Tennessee 16
1999 Denver 34, Atlanta 19
