One Day Cricket History
The first one-day international cricket match took place between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 5, 1971. Officials decided to play a one-off limited-overs game when rain washed out the first three days of the third Test. The Australians beat the Poms by five wickets but England opener John Edrich's 82 runs won him the man-of-the-match prize.
One-day international cricket matches attract enormous crowds across the world, including in Australia during the southern hemisphere summer. The VB Series started out as the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup in 1979-1980 when Australia, England and West Indies contested the tournament. The Windies wrapped up the final in double-quick time, defeating the Poms 2-0.
The one-day international cricket competition became the Benson & Hedges World Series in 1988-1989, with further name changes taking place in 1996-1997 (Carlton & United Series), 2000-2001 (Carlton Series) and 2001-2002 (VB Series) to accommodate sponsors. The format has not changed so much, though. The 2004-2005 tournament features Australia, Pakistan and West Indies, with the Australians facing the Windies in the first game at the MCG on January 14.
